Water Softeners

Oklahoma has some of the hardest water around, even in the city. Water that is hard contains elevated levels of calcium and/or magnesium (more than 10 grains per gallon). Hard water can cause mineral buildup around your faucets and reduce the life of your dishwasher, washing machine, ice maker and hot water tank. By softening your water you can extend the life of these appliances, use less soap and detergent and improve the look and feel of your skin and hair!

What Does a Water Softener Do?

Water softeners remove calcium and magnesium from water by sending hard water through a resin filter filled with a saltwater solution (sodium chloride, the same compound as table salt). The resin filter is formulated to capture the calcium and magnesium in the water and exchange those minerals for sodium from the salt solution. The reason sodium is used to replace the calcium and magnesium is that sodium will remain soluble in the water and leaving your faucets and appliances buildup-free.

Will It Put Salt in My Water?

No, water softeners do not produce saltwater. The process of water softening uses saltwater to exchange calcium and magnesium for sodium. This process will increase the amount of sodium that is in your water and your water will remain drinkable, in general. Extremely hard water could result in a more than desireable level of sodium in the water, and this would be handled by running the water through another filter, such as the Reverse-Osmosis De-Ionization Filter.
